Margin on plants: how it works when you sell online
Your margin on plants is the difference between what your customer pays, excluding VAT, and your purchase cost: the plant, the packing and the shipping. With a 40% margin you are competitive, and many plants sit above that. Whether you reach that margin depends mostly on one thing: how many plants go together in one box. This guide works it out with real prices from 25 October 2026. Prices change, so always calculate with your current prices. The examples come from the Netherlands: Dutch prices, Dutch VAT (9% on plants) and bol.com.
In short
- You pay for shipping per box. So sell small plants in a box or set: then you make a 50 to 70% margin.
- Large houseplants and large orders earn the most euros per order.
- A pot, extras, a Greeting Card and free shipping above an amount make every order bigger.
How margin works
An example. Your customer buys 6 Zamioculcas plants for €17.99 each, €107.94 in total. Of that, €8.91 goes to VAT. Your purchase cost at Everspring is about €31: ± €17 for the plants, ± €7 for packing and box and ± €7 for shipping that one box. You keep about €68, a margin of around 70%.
You set your selling price. The difference with your purchase cost is your margin. Always calculate it on the price excluding VAT: 9% for plants, 21% for pots, baskets and cards.
Note the difference between margin and markup. Margin is what you keep, as a share of your selling price excluding VAT. Markup is what you add on top of your purchase cost. If you buy for €10 and sell for €16.67 excluding VAT, your markup is 67% and your margin is 40%.
Shipping decides
You pay for shipping per box, not per plant. One lavender on its own costs you about €16: ± €1.50 for the plant, ± €9 for packing and box and ± €6 for shipping. The same lavender in a box of 6 costs about €4 each. With Mix & Match you combine plants from one supplier in one box.
What shipping costs differs per supplier and per box:
- A box of small plants: €6 to €8.50.
- A box with one large houseplant: ± €14.
- A large order: the shipping per box adds up.
Sell small plants in a box or set
One small plant on its own earns little, because shipping is then the largest part of your purchase cost. In a box of 6 or as a set, your cost per plant becomes low.
| Plant, 6 in one box | Your cost each | Other webshops each | You earn each |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zamioculcas | ± €5 | €17.99 | ± €11 |
| Butterfly bush | ± €7 | €23.99 | ± €15 |
| Aloe vera | ± €5 | €16.99 | ± €10 |
| Lavender 'Munstead' | ± €4 | €9.00 | ± €4 |
Large houseplants: more euros each
A large houseplant ships on its own in its own box. Shipping is then a small part of the price, so you earn more per plant.
| Plant, shipped on its own | Your cost each | Other webshops each | You earn each |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polyscias Fabian, 90 cm | ± €30 | €44.00 | ± €10 |
| Strelitzia Nicolai, 150 cm | ± €35 | €74.99 | ± €34 |
| Monstera Deliciosa, 140 cm | ± €59 | €83.95 | ± €18 |
| Kentia palm, 170 cm | ± €49 | €109.18 | ± €51 |
| Ficus Lyrata, 150 cm | ± €55 | €117.95 | ± €53 |
Large orders
With a large order, you pay for packing and shipping once for all the plants. Two examples with real prices:
| Order | Your cost | Other webshops | You earn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Houseplants for a whole home, 7 plants | ± €240 | €549.06 | ± €260 |
| A whole garden in one go, 29 plants | ± €280 | €583.15 | ± €260 |
Sell more on your product page
On your product page, your customer chooses more than just the plant: a pot from a row of pots, extras such as a moisture meter, potting soil or shears and a watering can, and a Greeting Card with their own message. If everything comes from the same supplier, it goes together in one box, without an extra shipment. The amounts in the animation are an example.
What an extra earns you depends on the price. Two examples with real prices:
| Extra | Your customer pays extra | Your extra cost | You earn extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basket with a 90 cm Strelitzia Nicolai | €15.00 | ± €8 | ± €4.50 |
| Greeting Card with own message | €2.95 | €1.50 | ± €1 |
Choose extras you really earn on. A cheap pot or plant food that other webshops sell for little sometimes earns you nothing. Work it out for each extra.
Free shipping above an amount
Below the threshold your customer pays shipping costs; above it you ship for free. That way your customer more often adds a second or third plant. One Zamioculcas with €5.95 shipping costs earns you ± €5. Three Zamioculcas plants for €53.97, shipped for free, earn ± €27. Set your threshold just above your average order.
Seasons and occasions
Plants sell all year, with peaks in the garden season and around the holidays. At Everspring, March to June are the busiest months.
- Spring: garden plants and large houseplants. Make sure your range is in place in February.
- Holidays: Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Christmas, with Greeting Cards and gift sets.
- Autumn and winter: indoor houseplants and corporate gifts.
Your own webshop, ads or bol.com
You pay commission and ads per order, so a bigger order leaves you more. The same example, a set of 3 Zamioculcas plants for €53.97:
| How your customer finds you | Cost per order | You earn |
|---|---|---|
| Your own webshop, via Google or Instagram | none | ± €27 |
| Your own webshop with ads | €8 (example) | ± €19 |
| bol.com, about 12% plus €0.95 per item | €7.43 | ± €20 |
On bol.com, sell sets and large plants. A single Zamioculcas for €17.99 costs you money there.
What still comes off
In this guide, "you earn" is what you keep after VAT and purchase cost. After that you still pay your own costs. Include them before you set your prices:
- Payment costs per order, such as iDEAL, credit card or PayPal.
- Ads or commission, as above.
- Your webshop, your software and your Everspring membership, per month.
- Your own time for customer contact, and for a plant that arrives damaged.
The more you earn per order, the easier it is to carry those costs. That is why it pays to sell more plants per box and extras on your product page.
Seven mistakes that cost margin
- Selling one cheap plant on its own. Instead: sell small plants in a set or box.
- Free shipping without a threshold. Instead: ship for free above an amount, such as €50.
- Following the lowest price on bol.com. Instead: sell sets and large plants your customer cannot easily compare.
- Forgetting VAT in your sums. Instead: always calculate your margin on the price excluding VAT.
- Offering only the plant. Instead: put a pot, basket or Greeting Card on your product page.
- Selling only in spring. Instead: plan Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Christmas ahead.
- No reason to come back. Instead: a subscription or a discount code on your packing slip.
Work out your own margin
Take a product from your own webshop. The example is a set of 3 Zamioculcas plants.
- 1
What your customer pays
The amount including VAT. Example: €53.97.
- 2
Take off the VAT
Divide by 1.09 for plants and by 1.21 for pots and cards. Example: €49.51.
- 3
Subtract your purchase cost
You see your purchase cost per product in your Everspring account. Example: ± €22.
- 4
Subtract ads or commission
What you pay per order. Example: €8.
- 5
What is left, you earn
Example: ± €19.
- 6
Work out your margin
Divide what you earn by the amount excluding VAT. Example: ± 40%.
Frequently asked questions
How much margin do you make on plants?
That differs per plant and per order. In the examples in this guide it is 50 to 70% on small plants in a box of 6, and around 50% on large orders. One small plant on its own earns little or nothing.
Is a 40% margin enough?
With 40% you are competitive with other webshops. Whether it is enough depends on your own costs: ads or commission, payment costs, your webshop and your membership. Include them.
What does it cost to ship a plant?
With the suppliers in this guide, €6 to €8.50 for a box of small plants and about €14 for one large houseplant, in the Netherlands, on 25 October 2026.
How do I make my margin bigger?
Sell more plants per box, offer a pot, basket or Greeting Card, ship for free above an amount and sell large plants and sets.
Are these fixed prices?
No. They are real prices from 25 October 2026; purchase costs, shipping and webshop prices change. You see your current purchase cost in your Everspring account.
